Sure, the strawberries themselves are fun, but wild strawberry plants have so much more to offer. These low-growers colonize bare ground via above-ground runners, making them a terrific ground cover for your shadier spots. They prefer moister soil, but will take drought in stride (although don't expect them to make new runners during dry times). With white flowers in the spring and summer and brilliant red fall foliage, wild strawberries always look nice. Perfect under shrubs or between taller perennials. Plant a few and see where they go!
